Israel has intensified its military operations across the occupied West Bank following a deadly confrontation involving Israeli soldiers, settlers and Palestinian residents, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warning that the government is prepared to launch an even broader offensive if security conditions continue to worsen.
The latest escalation follows a violent incident near the Palestinian village of Tell, southwest of Nablus, where clashes left six people dead, including two Israeli soldiers and four Palestinians. The confrontation has prompted one of the largest Israeli security operations in the West Bank in recent months, with troops conducting widespread raids, arrests and searches across several Palestinian communities.
Addressing the security situation after holding high-level consultations, Netanyahu vowed to respond firmly to what he described as ongoing terrorist threats. He said Israel was ready to take “more broad action” if necessary and announced plans to strengthen the military’s presence throughout the West Bank while advancing the establishment and recognition of additional Israeli settlement outposts in the territory.
Following the prime minister’s instructions, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) significantly expanded operations across northern parts of the occupied West Bank. Israeli troops entered Nablus and neighbouring villages, carrying out house-to-house searches, establishing military checkpoints and launching extensive arrest operations aimed at locating individuals suspected of involvement in Friday’s deadly violence.
Israeli military officials said dozens of Palestinians were detained during weekend raids as soldiers searched hundreds of homes and buildings. According to the military, several detainees are suspected of links to militant organisations, including Hamas, or involvement in activities considered a threat to Israeli security.
Authorities also confirmed that security personnel questioned around 80 residents from the village of Tell during the operation. Officials said eleven residents remained in custody while additional arrests were made elsewhere across the West Bank as investigations continued.
The military crackdown followed conflicting accounts surrounding the events that triggered the deadly confrontation.
Israeli officials said that soldiers and armed civilians came under attack, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which two Israeli soldiers were killed. Palestinian officials, however, accused Israeli settlers of initiating the violence by attacking local residents before Israeli forces became involved. Israeli authorities have rejected those allegations.
The incident has further heightened tensions across the occupied West Bank, where violence involving Israeli settlers, Palestinian residents and Israeli security forces has risen significantly in recent months.
During the overnight hours into Sunday, Palestinian officials reported that Israeli settlers carried out attacks on several villages, setting fire to two mosques and vandalising buildings with Hebrew-language graffiti. The attacks were reported near the cities of Nablus and Tulkarm, causing extensive damage to religious sites and nearby property.
The Israeli military condemned the attacks on the mosques, describing them as criminal acts, and announced that investigations had been launched to identify those responsible. Additional troops have also been deployed to prevent further clashes between settlers and Palestinian communities.
The latest unrest has intensified international concern over the deteriorating security situation in the occupied West Bank.
According to international organisations, violence involving Israeli settlers has increased sharply over the past year, resulting in numerous Palestinian deaths, widespread property damage and the displacement of families from several communities.
Netanyahu’s government has defended its military actions, arguing that they are essential to counter militant threats and prevent future attacks against Israeli civilians and security personnel.
At the same time, members of Israel’s governing coalition have renewed calls to expand settlements and strengthen Israeli control over the occupied territory. Those proposals continue to face criticism from the Palestinian Authority and much of the international community, which considers Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank to be illegal under international law, a position Israel disputes.
The ongoing military operation has also attracted criticism after Israeli troops entered a hospital in Nablus during one of the raids. Palestinian officials alleged that soldiers questioned medical staff, intimidated patients and detained an injured individual receiving treatment. Israeli authorities have not publicly responded in detail to those specific claims.
Meanwhile, Israeli military operations continue alongside the conflict in Gaza, where the army says it is targeting Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad militants. Palestinian health officials reported additional casualties from Israeli airstrikes over the weekend, while Israeli officials maintained that their operations remain focused on militant infrastructure.
As Israeli forces continue operating across multiple West Bank towns and villages, residents face ongoing movement restrictions, road closures and military searches. Israeli leaders have indicated that further operations remain under consideration, suggesting that the current campaign could be expanded if additional attacks occur or if intelligence points to emerging security threats.
