A shooting at a pub in eastern Toronto left a dozen people injured, described by police as a reckless act of violence carried out by three men who entered the establishment and opened fire without warning.
Superintendent Paul MacIntyre of the Toronto Police Service reported that numerous emergency calls were made around 10:40 pm on Friday regarding the incident at the Piper Arms. Initial investigations revealed that the three suspects entered the bar and began shooting at patrons. No arrests have been made yet.
One of the assailants was reportedly armed with what appeared to be an assault rifle, while the other two carried handguns. They entered the bar, brandished their weapons, and fired indiscriminately at those inside, according to MacIntyre, who noted that there were no fatalities.
When police arrived, they found 12 individuals with various injuries. The victims were taken to local hospitals, with six confirmed to have non-life-threatening gunshot wounds, which MacIntyre described as fortunate. The other six were injured by shattered glass and debris.
The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, with MacIntyre labeling it a bold and reckless act that has deeply unsettled the community and the city. He expressed horror at the footage captured by security cameras, stating, “These individuals just looked at the ground and opened fire.”
Following the shooting, a suspect wearing a black balaclava was seen fleeing in a silver vehicle and remains at large. Authorities advised the public to avoid the area.
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow mentioned that she had communicated with Police Chief Myron Demkiw, who assured her that all necessary resources were being utilized. She indicated that this is an ongoing investigation and promised that police would share more information as it becomes available, expressing her thoughts for the victims and their families on social media.
