A devastating fire at a nightclub in Kocani, a town in eastern North Macedonia, resulted in the deaths of 51 individuals early Sunday morning, with approximately 100 others sustaining injuries, as reported by Interior Minister Panche Toshkovski during a press conference. The fire erupted around 2:35 a.m. while a local pop group was performing, according to Toshkovski’s account.
He indicated that the use of pyrotechnics by the young attendees led to the ignition of the roof. Footage captured inside the nightclub depicted scenes of chaos, with patrons fleeing through smoke as the performers urged them to evacuate swiftly. This incident marks the most significant tragedy in recent history for the landlocked nation, which has a population of fewer than 2 million.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski expressed his sorrow on X, formerly known as Twitter, stating, “This is a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia. The loss of so many young lives is irreparable, and the pain of the families, loved ones, and friends is immeasurable.” He assured that both the people and the government would strive to ease the suffering of those affected during this challenging time.
Officials reported that the injured individuals have been transported to various hospitals across the country, including in the capital city of Skopje, with many suffering from severe burns. Numerous volunteer organizations are assisting in the response efforts. Family members have gathered outside hospitals and city offices in Kocani, seeking updates from authorities.
Toshkovski mentioned that police have apprehended one individual, although details regarding their involvement remain undisclosed. Marta Kos, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, expressed her condolences on X, stating, “Deeply saddened by the tragic fire in Kocani, North Macedonia, which claimed the lives of too many young people. My thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and the whole of North Macedonia.” It is noteworthy that North Macedonia is a candidate for European Union membership.
