Five individuals have tragically drowned following the arrival of massive waves that struck various regions of Australia at the beginning of the Easter weekend.
Additionally, two people are currently unaccounted for off the coasts of New South Wales and Victoria.
On Saturday, a man’s body was discovered in the waters near Tathra, located in southern New South Wales. This discovery occurred just one day after a 58-year-old fisherman and two other men were found deceased in separate incidents within the state.
Rescue teams are actively searching for a man who was swept into the water near Sydney. Furthermore, on Friday, a woman drowned, and a man went missing after their group was caught in the sea in San Remo, Victoria. According to Victoria police, “One of the women managed to return to shore, but the other woman and the man could not.”
Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan described the situation as an “awful start” to the Easter weekend.
“My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives in such tragic circumstances, and we may face more difficult news ahead,” she stated.
The eastern states of Australia have experienced severe conditions due to hazardous waves.
Adam Weir, the head of the charity Surf Life Saving Australia, urged holidaymakers to choose patrolled beaches, citing data that revealed 630 drownings at unpatrolled beaches over the past decade.n
