Former cricketer Danish Kaneria has accused Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif of harboring and supporting terrorists, implying that Pakistan is implicated in the recent Pahalgam terror attack in India that resulted in 26 fatalities. In a statement on X, the 44-year-old Kaneria, who resides in the UK, noted that Sharif’s silence regarding the attack suggests Pakistan’s involvement. Although Sharif has not publicly addressed the horrific event, the Pakistan Foreign Office has expressed its sorrow over the casualties.
Kaneria questioned, ‘If Pakistan genuinely has no connection to the Pahalgam terror attack, why has Prime Minister @CMShehbaz not condemned it? Why are your forces on heightened alert? Deep down, you are aware of the truth – you are sheltering and nurturing terrorists. Shame on you.’ Kaneria, who faced a ban for alleged spot-fixing in English county cricket, made this statement on X. The attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 26 individuals, primarily tourists, marks the deadliest incident in the region since the Pulwama attack in 2019.
The Resistance Front (TRF), a proxy group of the banned Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), has taken responsibility for the attack. In a subsequent post, Kaneria, who is only the second Hindu cricketer to represent Pakistan, praised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for delivering a powerful message in response to the attack on Thursday.
In a rare address in English, Modi pledged to ‘identify, track, and punish every terrorist and their supporters.’ He further stated that India would pursue the attackers ‘to the ends of the earth’ and emphasized that terrorism would never break the spirit of the nation. Kaneria expressed his admiration for Prime Minister @narendramodi’s choice to speak in English during the rally, ensuring that his warning resonates globally. He expressed hope that this would signify the beginning of the end for terrorism in South Asia, similar to the situation in Gaza.
