Julius Malema, a polarising figure in South African politics and central to ongoing debates over race relations in the country, has once again been denied entry to the United Kingdom.
According to the Home Office, Malema’s presence was considered “non-conducive to the public good,” and his entry was therefore deemed “undesirable.” This decision follows heightened concerns about his controversial statements and affiliations.
A letter obtained and published by South African news outlet News24 reveals that the UK government cited several reasons for the rejection. Chief among them was Malema’s outspoken support for Hamas, including a speech delivered shortly after the October 7 attacks. In that address, Malema reportedly pledged that his political party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), would arm Hamas if it gained power.
UK authorities also referenced past inflammatory remarks made by Malema, including threats to call for the “slaughter of white people” and to “take up arms.” These statements, the government argued, further justified the decision to bar his entry.
Malema’s EFF party, which secured fourth place in South Africa’s parliamentary elections last year, harshly criticised the UK’s move, labelling it “cowardice” and warning that it undermines democratic discourse. The party maintained that preventing Malema from traveling impedes free political expression.
The firebrand leader recently appeared in a video showcased by former U.S. President Donald Trump during a White House meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, adding to his international notoriety.
This marks the second time within two months that Malema has been denied entry into the UK. The first occasion was attributed to a late visa application. However, a British official based in South Africa told the BBC that this latest denial was a “substantive decision” based on deeper considerations.
The UK has informed Malema that he has no right to appeal the decision and is likely to be refused any future applications as well.
