LONDON: Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva met on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Summit to explore new avenues for enhancing cooperation between the United Arab Emirates and Brazil.
During the meeting, Sheikh Khaled expressed the UAE’s pride in its strategic partnership with Brazil, describing it as a pioneering relationship founded on decades of collaboration, mutual respect, and shared interests, according to the Emirates News Agency.
He emphasized that the enduring 50-year relationship between the two nations stands as a testament to their commitment to ongoing collaboration and sustainable development.
President Lula da Silva echoed these sentiments, highlighting the strength and depth of the bilateral ties between Abu Dhabi and Brasilia. He underscored the importance of the UAE-Brazil partnership in various sectors, affirming both countries’ readiness to further expand their cooperation.
The meeting took place as the 17th BRICS Summit convened in Rio de Janeiro, hosted on Sunday and Monday. The BRICS bloc, originally formed in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, was later joined by South Africa in 2010. In a significant expansion in late 2023, the UAE, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Iran also accepted invitations to become members of the group.
Several high-ranking Emirati officials were present at the bilateral meeting, including Reem Al-Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation; Thani bin Ahmed Al-Zeyoudi, Minister of Foreign Trade; and Saleh Ahmad Salem Alsuwaidi, UAE Ambassador to Brazil.
The discussions reflect both countries’ shared vision for deepening economic and diplomatic ties, aligning with the broader goals of the BRICS bloc to promote multipolar cooperation and global development.
