A FedEx cargo aircraft executed an emergency landing at a bustling New Jersey airport on Saturday following a bird strike that resulted in an engine fire visible in the morning sky. The aircraft landed at Newark Liberty International Airport during this incident, as confirmed by Lenis Valens, a representative of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, and the fire was confined to the engine, according to Valens. The emergency landing temporarily halted air traffic as a safety measure, but operations resumed shortly thereafter, Valens noted. The incident occurred shortly after 8 a.m.
A representative from FedEx confirmed that the aircraft was en route to Indianapolis. “Our crew declared an emergency and safely returned to Newark. We are grateful for the prompt actions of our crew and first responders,” stated the representative, Austin Kemker. This emergency landing occurs amid increased scrutiny regarding aviation safety. Over the past month, North America has witnessed four significant aviation incidents, including the tragic crash of a commuter plane in Alaska on February 6, which resulted in the loss of all 10 individuals on board, and the midair collision on January 26 between an Army helicopter and an American Airlines flight at National Airport, claiming the lives of all 67 individuals aboard both aircraft.
