Virat Kohli demonstrated that he remains a formidable force in cricket by scoring a remarkable century in a one-day international (ODI) match, leading India to victory against their long-standing rivals, Pakistan, during the ICC Champions Trophy.
In this match, Kohli achieved the distinction of being the fastest player and the third overall to accumulate 14,000 runs in ODIs. He also recorded his 51st century in this format, further extending his record, as he spearheaded India’s successful chase in a six-wicket triumph in Dubai on Sunday. The performance of the 36-year-old was particularly noteworthy given the intense pressure of the match and the surrounding speculation regarding his future in the sport.
Following the match, Kohli remarked that he focused on “shutting down the noise” to secure his unbeaten century.
“My objective was straightforward – to manage the middle overs, avoid risks against spinners, and challenge the fast bowlers. I was satisfied with my approach; it aligns with my style of play in ODIs,” he stated.
“I possess a solid understanding of my game. It is crucial to disregard external distractions, maintain my energy levels, and manage my thoughts. It is easy to become entangled in the expectations and excitement surrounding matches of this nature.”
Pakistan’s captain, Mohammad Rizwan, expressed that his admiration for Kohli has significantly increased.
“I contemplate the extent of his dedication, especially when the entire world was declaring him to be out of form. Yet, in a highly anticipated match, he effortlessly accumulates runs,” Rizwan remarked. “I commend his diligence and physical fitness.”
India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, noted that his teammates were not taken aback by Kohli’s ability to deliver a match-winning performance. Virat takes great pride in representing his country and excelling in his craft, as demonstrated by his performance today. Those in the dressing room were not taken aback by his achievements.
Kohli commenced the match with a total of 13,985 runs from 298 ODIs and surpassed the 14,000-run milestone with a graceful shot through the covers off pace bowler Haris Rauf.
He becomes only the third player to reach this landmark, following the legendary Sachin Tendulkar (18,426) and the esteemed Kumar Sangakkara (14,234) from Sri Lanka.
After scoring 22 runs in the opening victory against Bangladesh, Kohli formed a partnership of 114 runs with Shreyas Iyer, showcasing his skillful driving and flicking to secure his 82nd century across all formats with a boundary that sealed the win.
Upon completing his century, he removed his helmet and acknowledged the crowd’s standing ovation, which resonated with chants of his name.
“I have never perceived Virat as struggling for runs,” remarked Iyer.
“It is simply his enduring mindset; he is perpetually eager for runs. I recall that he arrived nearly an hour earlier than us for practice yesterday. Observing him from a distance, he appeared as sharp as ever.”
