Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, is set to implement anticipated layoffs across the organization next week while simultaneously accelerating the recruitment of machine learning engineers, as indicated in internal communications reviewed by Reuters on Friday.
Notifications regarding job losses will be distributed to affected employees starting at 5 a.m. local time on Monday in most regions, including the United States, as detailed in a message from Janelle Gale, Meta’s Head of People.
Employees located in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will not be subject to these layoffs “due to local regulations.” In contrast, employees in over a dozen other countries throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa will receive their notifications between February 11 and February 18.
A spokesperson for Meta declined to provide comments on the internal communications.
Last month, the company confirmed its intention to reduce approximately 5 percent of its “lowest performers” while also planning to fill some of the vacated positions. The memo issued on Friday, in which Gale referred to the layoffs as “performance terminations,” was initially reported by The Information.
Meta has decided to maintain the operation of its offices on Monday, contrary to previous instances of company-wide layoffs, and will not provide any further updates regarding the decisions, as stated by Gale in her communication.
Additionally, a separate memo from Peng Fan, the Vice President of Engineering for Monetization, was released on Friday, urging employees to facilitate an expedited hiring process for machine learning engineers and other roles deemed “business critical.” This hiring initiative is scheduled to occur between February 11 and March 13, according to Fan’s announcement.
“I appreciate your ongoing support in helping us meet our accelerated hiring objectives and in aligning more effectively with our company’s priorities for 2025.”
