The State Department has prohibited former Argentine President Cristina Fernandez from entering the United States, citing her involvement in substantial corruption during her tenure. Additionally, Fernandez’s planning minister, Julio Miguel De Vido, along with their families, has also been banned.
According to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, both Kirchner and De Vido exploited their official positions to orchestrate and profit from various bribery schemes related to public works contracts, leading to the embezzlement of millions of dollars from the Argentine government. He emphasized that multiple courts have found them guilty of corruption.
Fernandez has been a prominent political figure in Argentina in recent years. Rubio stated that the United States remains committed to ensuring accountability for individuals who misuse public authority for personal benefit. These actions underscore our dedication to combating global corruption, even at the highest levels of government.
In November, an Argentine tribunal upheld a six-year prison sentence and a lifetime prohibition from holding public office against Fernandez. She was convicted in 2022 by a three-judge panel for a fraudulent scheme that misappropriated millions through public works projects during her presidency. Although she appealed the decision, the higher court confirmed the initial ruling.
Fernandez has consistently denied all allegations and is not currently incarcerated.
