Ukraine is facing another intense wave of Russian aerial attacks, with Ukrainian authorities reporting casualties, damage to civilian infrastructure and continued strikes on Kyiv and other parts of the country.
The latest escalation followed a major drone assault on September 28, when Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said more than 120 drones had been launched against the country. According to his account, around 90 of those drones were jet-powered, presenting an additional challenge for Ukrainian air-defense forces. Ukrainian authorities reported at least nine deaths and more than 80 injuries from attacks across several regions.
One of the most prominent incidents occurred in central Kyiv, where a drone struck the National Academy of Sciences. The attack caused a fire and severe damage to parts of the historic building. Emergency officials reported two deaths at the site, while authorities also reported casualties at other locations around the country.
The attacks continued into Tuesday, with explosions reported in Kyiv during another air-raid alert. Kyiv officials said missile debris landed in the courtyard of a residential building, while another non-residential structure was damaged by fire.
New concerns over North Korean military involvement
Alongside the latest attacks, Zelensky has raised concerns about Russia’s continued recruitment and military cooperation with North Korea.
The Ukrainian president said Russia currently has about 8,000 North Korean troops in the country and claimed another 10,000 personnel are being prepared for training and possible deployment. These figures are claims from the Ukrainian side and have not been independently established in the available reporting. Russian President Vladimir Putin has previously rejected claims of a new Russian mobilization.
The development adds another international dimension to the conflict, as Ukraine continues to seek additional air-defense capabilities and other military assistance from its partners.
Ukraine develops new interception systems
Zelensky said Ukraine is testing new interceptor systems designed to counter the faster jet-powered drones being used in recent attacks.
According to his September 28 address, some Ukrainian combat units are already using the new systems, although further technical improvements and wider deployment are still required.
The recent attacks have also affected businesses, medical facilities, communications infrastructure and other civilian sites. In Dnipro, officials reported deaths and injuries after a drone struck a business center, while attacks were also reported in Zaporizhzhia and other regions.
Both Russia and Ukraine have continued to accuse each other of attacks during the ongoing war, while both sides deny deliberately targeting civilians.
The latest strikes underscore the continuing intensity of the conflict as Ukraine enters another period of sustained aerial attacks and works to strengthen its defenses against newer types of Russian drones.
