North Korea announced on Friday that it successfully conducted test launches of strategic cruise missiles to showcase its nuclear counter-attack capabilities. This development follows the country’s declaration to retaliate against what it perceives as increasing hostilities led by the United States since the beginning of the Trump administration.
According to the official Korean Central News Agency, leader Kim Jong Un supervised the missile tests, which took place off the western coast of the country on Wednesday. This marked the fourth missile launch event for North Korea this year and the second during President Donald Trump’s second term.
The purpose of these launches, as stated by KCNA, was to convey to adversaries who are significantly undermining North Korea’s security and escalating tensions that the military possesses a robust counterattack capability and is prepared for nuclear operations.
Kim expressed his approval of the outcomes of the exercises and emphasized the necessity for the military to remain combat-ready and capable of deploying nuclear weapons, as reported.
President Trump has indicated his intention to reconnect with Kim following their three summits during his first term. However, North Korea has not directly addressed Trump’s outreach, continuing instead its customary aggressive rhetoric towards the United States alongside its weapons testing activities.
Numerous analysts suggest that Kim, currently focused on supporting Russia’s military efforts in Ukraine through the provision of arms and personnel, is unlikely to respond positively to Trump’s overtures in the near future. They indicate that Kim might reconsider his stance if he becomes uncertain about maintaining North Korea’s strong collaboration with Russia following the conclusion of the conflict.
Recently, North Korea’s Defense Ministry accused the United States and its allies of escalating military provocations aimed at North Korea since Trump’s administration began. The ministry referenced a recent joint aerial exercise between the US and South Korea that involved a US B-1B bomber, along with other reported activities concerning US military resources. A statement from the Defense Ministry asserted that North Korea would address the strategic threat posed by the US through appropriate strategic measures.
Kim and Trump engaged in three meetings between 2018 and 2019 to negotiate the future of North Korea’s nuclear program; however, their diplomatic efforts faltered due to disagreements over sanctions imposed by the US. Since then, Kim has significantly accelerated the frequency of weapons tests to enhance and modernize his nuclear and missile capabilities. With an expanded nuclear arsenal, experts believe that Kim may perceive an opportunity to secure more favorable concessions from the US should he choose to reinitiate diplomatic relations with Trump.
