Prime Minister Narendra Modi characterized the relationship between India and Saudi Arabia as an “unbounded partnership” during his visit to Jeddah. This marks his third visit to the Kingdom since 2016. In an interview with Arab News, Modi referred to Saudi Arabia as “a reliable friend and strategic partner,” noting that the two nations have significantly strengthened their ties since the establishment of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019.
He emphasized, “Our partnership possesses limitless potential. In a world rife with uncertainties, our connection remains robust, serving as a foundation of stability.” Modi commended Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman for enhancing the relationship, describing him as “a staunch proponent of our bilateral relations” and “a visionary who has garnered global respect through the reforms of Vision 2030.”
He remarked, “Each encounter with His Royal Highness has profoundly impacted me. His insights, forward-looking vision, and dedication to realizing the aspirations of his people are truly exceptional.” Modi also addressed the economic advancements between the two nations, noting that despite global challenges, trade has flourished, particularly in energy, agriculture, and fertilizers. He advocated for deeper collaboration in emerging sectors such as green hydrogen and technology, stating, “Indian enterprises have established a significant presence across various industries in Saudi Arabia.”
Furthermore, he congratulated Saudi Arabia on securing the bids to host World Expo 2030 and the FIFA World Cup 2034, calling these accomplishments a source of “great pride.” He also underscored the increasing defense collaboration, including joint military exercises, as indicative of enhanced strategic trust. Regarding the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC), which was inaugurated during the G20 Summit in 2023, Modi asserted that the initiative would serve as “a vital catalyst for commerce, connectivity, and growth throughout the region.”
The Indian government stated that the visit underscores the significance India places on its bilateral relations with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. During the visit, Prime Minister Modi is expected to discuss the allocation of Indian pilgrims for the Hajj, the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, as reported by PTI. India’s Hajj quota for 2025 has increased to 175,025 from 136,020 in 2014, with arrangements for 122,518 pilgrims already finalized. However, due to delays from certain travel agencies managing the Hajj, approximately 42,000 Indians may be unable to participate this year.
The two leaders will also engage in discussions regarding health, research, new technologies, culture, science, space, and energy. Modi has invited Saudi Arabia to invest in India, encouraging Saudi companies to seize the substantial opportunities presented by India’s development initiative, termed ‘Viksit Bharat’. These investments could contribute to the construction of modern infrastructure, enhancement of transportation, support for renewable energy, healthcare, innovation, start-ups, and sectors such as the ‘blue economy’, which encompasses ocean-related industries.
