Major Investment Plans Take Shape
The United States and South Korea are moving forward with discussions surrounding a $350 billion investment package, with proposed projects spanning energy, infrastructure, shipbuilding and advanced technology.
According to a Reuters report published September 18, the package follows a trade agreement that reduced U.S. tariffs on South Korean products to 15%. Around $150 billion of the proposed investment is connected to shipbuilding, while another $200 billion is being considered for strategic sectors.
Energy Infrastructure for AI and Semiconductor Growth
One of the projects under discussion is a large natural-gas power plant in Encinal, Texas. The proposed facility would have a potential capacity of approximately 6.3 gigawatts and is intended to provide electricity for AI data centers and semiconductor manufacturing operations.
Reports indicate that the project could initially begin with approximately 1.4 gigawatts of gas-turbine capacity before additional facilities are developed.
Nuclear Power Also Part of Discussions
Nuclear energy is another major area being considered. The two countries are discussing the possibility of developing up to eight large nuclear reactors in the United States.
The proposals reportedly include six reactors using Westinghouse technology and two based on South Korean designs. Seoul is also discussing a possible investment in Westinghouse.
Alaska LNG and Other Projects
South Korea is also examining potential participation in the Alaska LNG project, a large proposed development designed to transport natural gas from northern Alaska toward an export terminal.
Other areas reportedly under discussion include carbon-capture technology and cooperation involving spent nuclear fuel.
Why the Investment Matters
The proposed projects demonstrate how energy supply, artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and strategic infrastructure are becoming increasingly connected.
However, the details of several projects remain under negotiation, and South Korean officials have indicated that not all reported proposals have been formally finalized.
The investment discussions therefore represent projects under consideration rather than completed investments.
